More on the Therapeutae

I have pointed to info about the ongoing research on the Therapeutae in some earlier postings (see here), and here is some more:
Philonics - and others interested in the Therapeutae - going to the SBL Annual Meeting in Texas this November might be interested in the fact that a whole program unit willl focus on meals in the Therapeutae community. Description: Bringing a variety of recent research strands together, this consultation seeks insights into early Christianity and Judaism as reflected in meals of the Greco-Roman world. The 2002 session references archeology, women, ritual, Christian origins, first century Judaism, and eucharist.
The topic for 2004 is "Deciphering an Ancient Meal: The Therapeutae as a Test Case." The session will consist of a series of brief papers (already assigned) which will analyze the Therapeutae text in Philo from a variety of methodological perspectives. We invite all interested parties to join us in a roundtable discussion that will follow the presentations. Philonics should note this, and I do hope the session will not be set up at the same time as the meetings of the Philo of alexandria Group.

BTW, Dennis Smith is the one wrote From Symposium to Eucharist. The Banquet in the Early Christian World (Fortress press,2003). He comments on the Therapeutae on pp.158-159 and a few other places scattered in the book. Tolle lege! See you in San Antonio?
